Set to the tune of One by Harry Nilsson, we got the first trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. A sequel to the symbiotic shadow of Marvel studios, Venom, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and the voice of Venom.

Whilst fans clamoured for an R-Rated massacre for the first standalone villain/anti-hero film since the success of Deadpool, we instead were greeted with a buddy cop tale between a failed reporter and his symbiotic alien insidekick, Venom. Fan reception of the film was divided but Hardy’s performance as Eddie Brock and Venom gained praiseworthy reviews. The post-credit scene gave us an afroclad Cletus Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson, promising Carnage.

Well, going by this trailer alone, it looks like we’re getting softcore Carnage playing with a sugar rush Venom and his exhausted dad. Where the trailer for the first Venom film offered the premise of inner demons taking over, this just doesn’t really set up anything. Venom wants chocolate? A secret organisation decides it’d be a good idea to inject a symbiote into a convicted criminal? I don’t get what we’re alluding to other than the promise of an on-screen Carnage and Venom fight which is vacant from this first showcase. Any darkness that was initially created for the film series has been brushed aside for comedy and as Deadpool put it best “BIG CGI FIGHT”.

We get a glimpse of Ravencroft Institute; the Arkham Asylum of Marvel, where a potential saving grace in Naomi Harris’ Shriek is held in captivity. How she’ll fit into the story could make for an interesting dynamic between Carnage and Venom.

Despite a welcome surprise of Andy Serkis as the film’s director, we’re not exactly ecstatic for more Venom going by this trailer. With forced comedy and a lack of storytelling at the helm, I can only imagine this first trailer was purely to show us a glimpse of Carnage and to be fair, he looks great from what we see. That is, a smaller red version of Venom but perhaps Woody can offer some much-needed character to the creature.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set to drop on the 24th of September later this year, exclusively in cinemas. Tom Hardy’s face here is our overall reaction so far…
